Q: Legally Disowning Parents as an Adult

Does anyone know anything about dissolving any kind of legal bond you might have with your parents that is assumed by society?

For example, I am an unmarried almost 30 year old who has not seen or spoken to my abusive parents for over ten years. They are 200 miles from me, but in the same state. I understand that legally they are my next of kin, and would have rights I do not wish them to have should something happen to me. I would like a way to terminate those rights.

Durable power of attorney? Any other ideas?

Well, you might want to look into creating a will in order to be clear about inheritance issues for one. And you'll definitely want to look into setting up a quick document about power of attorney. I think it's as simple as creating a power of attorney letter ... and to be safe you can have it notarized.

You might be able to access a community lawyer who can consult you on a sliding scale if youre concerned about your finances. Or do you know someone who knows a lawyer?

Yes- talk to a lawyer and have a will/DNR/power of attorney/etc that would express your wishes drawn up.

In fact, just seeing a lawyer and talking about your options is going to be your best bet.
