Q: Leg pains and vascular disorders
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 24th, 2008
In October of last year I started having pain in both my legs. Mainly the thigh area and hips. The pain went away within a few weeks. I am 35 years old and a smoker for about 12 years. Now during the last week, these pains have come back and I feel them in my things, hips, calves and feet. They are not necessarily worse when I do activities. At night, the pain seems to be less. Once I wake up, it takes about a few hours before the pain hits again and goes on pretty much all day before I go to bed where it seems to lessen. Should I be concerned? is there any medication that can help relieve the pain that I should be taking? I do not have high blood pressure but my readings are sometimes borderline. Any suggestions would help
thanks

I don’t think that your legs’ pains have any relation to your blood pressure even if it is borderline or increased.
Pain in the legs could originate from the nerves (neuralgia). There are various reasons (diabetes, alcoholism, compression, poisoning, etc.) that could affect the nerves (neuropathy).

Pains can also originate from the muscles, muscle tendons, bones and joints. These can be affected by inflammations, injuries, degenerative disorders, etc.

Circulatory disorders (vein stasis or disturbed arterial blood supply) can also cause leg pain.
You may want to visit your primary health provider, first, and then, if necessary, you can be referred to a specialist (neurologist, orthopedist, rheumatologist, etc.).
