Q: Leg pain
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 9th, 2008
It was all well until i went to a rock concert around a week and a half ago. The next day i noticed a bruise behind my knee and have had a dull pain at different times throughout the day, most prominently when standing.
My question is, what could be causing this pain? Ive had some numbness on the top of my foot since surgery and was explained that this is common nerve damage. Could my dancing at the rock concert cause pain to the nerves behind my knee? or is there a chance that there is blood moving into different veins causing pain? An explantion for the pain would be great.
Thankyou.

Vascular and Circulatory Disorders Answer A4247
Current medical status: 6 months ago i noticed a large saphenous varicose vein in my right leg. Ive subsequently had stripping surgery around 2.5 months ago. the vein was stripped to my knee but there is some remnents of small varocities behind the knee.
Current medical treatment: no medication, Ive had an utrasound since and there was nothing untoward found.

The leg pain could originate from the muscles because of the excessive physical efforts (dancing) during the concert.

Pain in the leg could originate from the nerves only if something puts pressure on or damages the nerves. I can’t see such a possibility in your case.

Disturbed blood circulation can also cause the pain. During the operation only the enlarged surface vein(s) was removed. Deep veins remained intact so blood has a free way to go.

It is very important to discover why the surface (saphenous) vein was enlarged. If the surface vein was enlarged because of the disturbed deep vein circulation it mustn’t be removed because it provides alternative vein circulation in the leg. If deep vein circulation is okay then the enlarged surface vein can be removed.
