left side mid-back pain
Avatar
My daughter has been experiencing back pain mostly on her left side mid-back, but occasionally on the right. The pain is constant but greater at times than others. When we went to the doctor they thought maybe it was a pulled muscle and gave her muscle relaxers, but this did not seem to help other than they tend to make her sleepy so she was able to sleep through the night. They also tested he urine and said she had small amounts of protein in her urine. They said this was not anything to worry about but they did want her to come back in two weeks to have her urine checked again. The pain in her back decreased and at times went away. This Tuesday we went back to have her urine checked as scheduled and when they called they said there was still some small traces of protein in her urine and wanted he to go to the lab downstairs to have another urine analysis done. So we did this Thursday morning and are still waiting to hear back from the doctor, but now the pain is back on the left side of her back again. I have read on the internet that protein in urine can be because of many things but one of them being kidney disease and since the back pain is in the same area that her kidneys would be located I am very concerned. I just hope the doctor calls with some information from this last test very soon because I am going crazy waiting and wondering.

Update:
Well the last urine test came back clear, which is great news. So we thought we were just dealing with a muscle strain as suggested, but now we are not sure because her back pain is still persistent. In fact it has actually gotten worse. We have been back and forth to the doctor several times. They are still saying that it is muscular, she has chronic muscle spasms and that she should go see a Physical Therapist. The PT has not been able to get her in yet she is supposed to go on Thursday 10-8-09. The pain increased to the point she could not get out of bed without help so we returned to the doctor last Thursday 10-1-09. We were told that they still thought it was muscular and that the muscle was swollen and possibly pinching a nerve. They put her on methylprednisolone and Tylenol 3 with codeine and said this should help but if not better by Monday call the office. The combination of these two medicines seem to help a little but not a lot so we called the doctor with an update and was told to continue the dosage. Well last night Monday 10-5-09 the pain not only increased it is now is through out her entire middle & upper back, neck and shoulders, and her side and front around the bottom of the rib cage. The pain is so severe it is hard for her to walk and hurts when she takes a deep breath. We went this afternoon for x-rays and blood this afternoon and tomorrow she will be going to see a spine specialist. A friend of mine suggested going to see a Chiropractor which might be our next move depending on what the specialist says in the morning.

Back pain- no diagnosis
I have had undiagnosed back pain for 2 years. I lifted some heavy boxes and the next day the pain was bad. The following day, it was worse. I have been to 4 orthos, 2 physical therapists and still no diagnosis. You can press on the middle of my back and to the left and right and the pain is terrible. I have had an MRI and numerous X-Rays. Any ideas on what this could be?
