Back pain symptoms may seem obvious. But do you know when symptoms of back pain are more serious or when to see a doctor? Learn what action to take & when...
My daughter has been experiencing back pain mostly on her left side mid-back, but occasionally on the right. The pain is constant but greater at times than others. When we went to the doctor they thought maybe it was a pulled muscle and gave her muscle relaxers, but this did not seem to help other than they tend to make her sleepy so she was able to sleep through the night. They also tested he urine and said she had small amounts of protein in her urine. They said this was not anything to worry about but they did want her to come back in two weeks to have her urine checked again. The pain in her back decreased and at times went away. This Tuesday we went back to have her urine checked as scheduled and when they called they said there was still some small traces of protein in her urine and wanted he to go to the lab downstairs to have another urine analysis done. So we did this Thursday morning and are still waiting to hear back from the doctor, but now the pain is back on the left side of her back again. I have read on the internet that protein in urine can be because of many things but one of them being kidney disease and since the back pain is in the same area that her kidneys would be located I am very concerned. I just hope the doctor calls with some information from this last test very soon because I am going crazy waiting and wondering.

Update:
Well the last urine test came back clear, which is great news. So we thought we were just dealing with a muscle strain as suggested, but now we are not sure because her back pain is still persistent. In fact it has actually gotten worse. We have been back and forth to the doctor several times. They are still saying that it is muscular, she has chronic muscle spasms and that she should go see a Physical Therapist. The PT has not been able to get her in yet she is supposed to go on Thursday 10-8-09. The pain increased to the point she could not get out of bed without help so we returned to the doctor last Thursday 10-1-09. We were told that they still thought it was muscular and that the muscle was swollen and possibly pinching a nerve. They put her on methylprednisolone and Tylenol 3 with codeine and said this should help but if not better by Monday call the office. The combination of these two medicines seem to help a little but not a lot so we called the doctor with an update and was told to continue the dosage. Well last night Monday 10-5-09 the pain not only increased it is now is through out her entire middle & upper back, neck and shoulders, and her side and front around the bottom of the rib cage. The pain is so severe it is hard for her to walk and hurts when she takes a deep breath. We went this afternoon for x-rays and blood this afternoon and tomorrow she will be going to see a spine specialist. A friend of mine suggested going to see a Chiropractor which might be our next move depending on what the specialist says in the morning.

Back pain- no diagnosis
I have had undiagnosed back pain for 2 years. I lifted some heavy boxes and the next day the pain was bad. The following day, it was worse. I have been to 4 orthos, 2 physical therapists and still no diagnosis. You can press on the middle of my back and to the left and right and the pain is terrible. I have had an MRI and numerous X-Rays. Any ideas on what this could be?

I don't know if this will help but...
I have fibromyalgia and my back spasms and hurts in the middle switching back and forth between the right and left sides. It's one of my trigger areas maybe you could ask your doctor for a pressure point test? I went to a rhumetologist who diagnosed me... along with my back i have pains in my right shoulder and hip and up the sides of my neck almost constantly. On occasion a few other weird ones will spring up whenever they feel like it but exercise and stretching helps.

Back left pains
I was having terrible pains in my back left hand side but would occasionally move to my right. The pain was so intense I would keep me awake and wake me up from sleep. One or twice i had to go to hospital in the middle of the night. I wasnt diagnosed for 6 years, it turned out i had an infected swollen Gall Bladder which contained Gall stones. Had key hole surgery to remove my gal bladder. I havent suffered from the pain since.

Sever middle back pain on the left side in rib area!
I have had this pain 3 times, this most recent started today! It drops me everytime and I can't breath...so the last couple times I went to my chiropractor and she said my ribs had turned/twisted and locked up. Anyway she was able to help me almost immediately by adjusting me. Now this morning I called her and she seen me immediately and worked on me and worked on me. She couldn't get my rib back into place. The slightest wrong move and takes my breath away and I am unable to breath. I remind myself to stay calm as not to hiper venilate and pass out, which almost happened this moring when I tried to get off the moving table. So now I am icing my back with only seems to help a very minimun. My chiropractor wants me to go to the er since it's Sunday...so I am going to go to the er shortly. She is worried I have kidney stones this time, so I guess I will see. But bottom line I strongly suggest starting with a chiropractor!!

a solution that works
If I may...... I've had back pain since the age of 8. Arthritis since age 12, and at 27 diagnosed with fibromyalgia.... I'm 29 and have only had 2 back spasms since ive treated myself through a holistic center. I get monthly colonics done. A coworker took a year to convince me to do it, but it has been a life s saver. Please look into it. I have been pain fee for an entire year, a very foreign concept to me. Docs only prescribed medicine are medicine and Ontario therapists grouted, buy only to an extent... Please look into
hydrotherapy/ colonics. Good luck.

Gallbladder pain
I woke up in July with pain that went all around my back and front. It hurt when I laid down, sat, stood, or would take a breath. I had fatigue and nausea with it. Turns out it was my gallbladder. The doctors originally thought I pulled a back muscle or bruised my ribs. It was gallstones and an irritated gallbladder. I am having my gallbladder taken out this coming Tuesday. That should help.
