Q: Left hip locked
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 19th, 2009
Hello, My question today is regarding a new kind of back pain I've been having for the last few days.

For the last year or so my left hip joint will feel "locked" sometimes and I'd have to lay on the ground & move my leg around to "pop" the joint to be comfortable. For the last 1-2 weeks I've been feeling soreness on the back of my left thighs more-than-average when I stretch. (FYI I take ballet and hiphop classes, intermediate/non-pro level twice a week)

Over the last few days, after dance class my left heel would feel sore, and when I wriggle around my toes I notice the muscles on the back of my feet/toes are sore too. I also felt mild numbing pain on my mid back, feeling like having a hole in my back. Last night pain started to get intense, somehow when I exhale. Not every time, but every 10-20 breaths, worse when staying still. Pain starts around stomach/lungs, transfer to mid back, then travel down to lower back. Pain is squeezing/scorching type. What could this be?

According to the data you provided, you might be experiencing sciatica. Sciatica is a condition in which the sciatic nerve is either compressed or irritated, thus causing pain along the nerve. Various conditions might cause the compression. One of the most often is a spinal disc herniation.
You might want to visit an orthopaedist for further exams.
Meanwhile, you might want to avoid stretching and to apply some heat on the back to try to relax the muscles close to the sciatic nerve, which might be additionally aggravating the condition.
