Q: laxative side effects?

I had some constipation a few days ago that lasted for several days so I decided to take a laxative (correctol). It was a horrible experience! I had terrible stomach cramping, nausea, and was having diarrhea all night and the next day! Is this a normal response to a laxative? I only took 1 pill and the directions say to take 1 to 3 pills so its not like I overdid it or anything. Also, even now, several days later, my stomach has felt really weird and I've been bloated and had back pain. Are the effects supposed to last that long? If anyone has had a similar experience I would love to hear it... I cant figure out if these are common side effects of laxatives or I just had an extreme reaction to it. I definitely wont be trying corretol again any time soon!
