Late period, on birth control, negative preg test

My girlfriend and I had sex a few day after her period, she is on birth control and has been several months. This particular time we had sex I came in her for the first time and the only time. She is now on her sugar pills and normally she starts her period right away however she is 3 or 4 days late. She took an at home pregnancy test and it came back negative. Are we just freaking ourselves out or should we be really worried that she is pregnant.

Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum.
If she has been regular in taking her birth control pills at scheduled time daily, and has not missed taking any active birth control pill, she should remain protected. Due to hormonal changes, she can have delay in periods. She should get her periods by the time she finishes with taking the placebo/sugar pills. Wait and watch for her periods. She should visit her doctor/gynecologist for further evaluation if periods are missed or abnormal, or if she suspects chances of pregnancy.
Take care.
