I was just wondering what your views were as to why the number of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomies being carried out as Day Cases is still so low? Why are providers reluctant to offer this service as a Day Case? Investigating this on the net has proven quite difficult and the only arguments I can really find against Lap Chole as a Day Case are the following:
1. Biliary Leak
2. Postoperative Analgesia
3. Reactionary Haemorrhage
4. Secondary Haemorrhage
The thing is no.1 & no.4 would occur days after the operation anyway so I don't really feel that these are viable arguments.

Do you have any knowledge/ideas on this?

I really appreciate your input so thank you for taking the time to help.

Kind Regards,

Holdo85

Your question is interesting, and I think that your arguments in favor of Same-Day laparoscopic cholecystectomy are valid.

My own personal experience, over the past 15 years, is that the majority of laparoscopic cholecystectomies are, indeed, performed on an outpatient basis. (I only admit patients following this surgery if they have significant comorbid illnesses, or if their operation has been unusually difficult or complicated, or if they experience any significant problems during or after general anesthesia.)
