Q: labial itch

About two weeks ago, I started getting a itchy/dry discomfort of the vulva/labial, primarily around the clitoral hood. At first I chalked it up to vaginal dryness, and figured it would go away when my period would begin. A few days later, my period did begin, but the discomfort, while slightly better, did not go away. My period ended a few days ago, and the discomfort has become worse. It is sometimes almost unbearable. I have no odd odors or vaginal discharge, and have never experienced this before.

Because of the lack of discharge/odor, I assume that it is not an infection. I haven't changed my diet or soap or anything recently, so I don't think it's an allergic reaction or irritation. I do not douche or use feminine deodorants. I did buy some new bath towels recently, but when this became problematic, I switched to my old towels to see if perhaps I was having a reaction to the towel, and it still has not improved.

What could be causing this? If it is an infection of some kind, will it go away on its own? If it is merely an allergic reaction, what is the expected time frame for this to diminish?

I did try to take some Benadryl and rinsed myself with warm salt water, as suggested online, and it did help a bit, but it is not a permanent solution.

Any thoughts on this?

I'm impressed that you've NEVER experienced labia itch before. Since I was a kid, I've experienced this symptom, first as a sign of a yeast infection, and later with chronic bacterial vaginal infections. Consider yourself lucky! Smile

I'd suggest that you follow up with a gynecolgist if the symptom doesn't go away in the next couple of days. I'm not sure if you're sexually active, or not...but itchy genitals are a signal that something is going on...so it's better to be safe than sorry. Most often, if there is an infection present, doctors will prescribe either an oral or vaginal antibiotic...so you can also does up on immune enhancing supplements and see if a strong immune system ALONE can fight these symptoms.

Good luck!

I agree with the post above. If you are having vaginal area itching something is going on. my guess would be a yeast infection, as i have had a few with only itching no smell. Of course if you are sexually active, it may be something else. the only way to know for sure is to go to your gyn. Also, there is this good product out now, i cant remember the name right now, but it is an OTC yeast infection test kit. I used it once because i was too busy to get a gyn appt. and it was accurate, all i had to do was go get the OTC yeast infection treatments and it cured it in no time. Good LUck!

hey, thanks for the great suggestions. I had no idea that yeast infections could occur without discharge.

I guess I'm lucky to have never experienced this before (and wow, I hope I never do again. How horribly, HORRIBLY uncomfortable!).

It seems to have gotten quite a bit better since I posted last night (go figure), so I'm going to give it a few more days and see if it goes away on its own. If not, I'll head to the doctor later this week.

I did recently have some sexual contact with a new partner, but condoms were used, and there was only one short instance in which we came into (non-penetrative) contact without a condom, so it is unlikely to be an STD (I hope).

thank you both, again!

Hey, i read your last post and just wondered if the itch started after the sexual encounter with the condom? If so, maybe you had a slight allergic reaction to the latex, couldve been anything! glad youre feeling better though, they can be a real pain!!
