Hi I am 20 year old female and about a year and 2 months ago i tore my MCL in my left knee and stretched out the LCL in it as well. The Dr. that saw me said it was either a 2nd or 3rd stage tear of the MCL. They did x-rays and i did not tear any cartilage in my knee. So i was put on crutches, pain meds, a muscle relaxer for night, and told to ice it. I stayed on the crutches for about 2 months before i started walking on it. During that time my knee would twitch frequently but after some time of healing it stopped. Then about 2 months ago i went to the chiropractor and while i was there he tested me knee and said that it was still at least a stage 1 tear. In the past 2 weeks my knee has been twitching multiple times a day and very rapidly at the same place the MCL tore. It will last for 2-5 minutes each time it occurs. I wanted to know if there is a reason for this twitching and if it is something i should be concerned about. I know my knee isn't fully healed and i also wanted to know how long it might be before it is completely healed. I do a lot with my knee including being down on my knees for long periods of time, lifting a elderly lady who weighs 125 pounds many times a week, and playing tennis. It does hurt and swell some days when i do a lot with it especially when playing tennis. I wanted to know if doing these things will cause it to heal slowly or cause more damage to the knee. If you could let me know the answers to my questions that would be wonderful. I hope i gave as much information as was needed. Thank you

I am not a doctor nor a nurse, however, I have had a lot of experience with knee problems...I don't think that your MCL tear will heal on it's own...IMO, you are doing everything to make it worse...By playing tennis you are constantly stretching the motion of the knee and then to add lifting a 125 pound elderly woman again puts tremendous strain on it...It swells because it is injured inside...IMO, it twitches for the same reason...It is quivering from the injury and becoming more unstable...I question if you saw an Orthopedist to start or just a regular doctor...Again I can't see how a chiropractor would help with a tear...I am just about positive that this needs surgery to heal...

You can post this question to the doctor at the top of this page and he can answer you with more accuracy on this...Just cut and paste it to where it says "Ask The Doctor"...I wish I could help you more on this, but I can't...After living with knee problems, I feel that something is not right when you are having so many problems at this time....

Take care and I hope it gets better....

I'm also not a doctor but speaking from experience (I experienced a similar injury with a complete tear of the MCL, complete tear of the PCL and torn meniscus cartilage). I was operated on and the Doctor said that the MCL was more a major issue than the PCL (the PCL was left to heal on it's own) the MCL on the other hand was fixed right away with surgery as my knee was giving way under my weight. The MCL is really important for knee stability. I would suggest going to see a physiotherapist or a doctor (preferably one specialising in sports injuries) to get some advice.

The reason I say this is because after all the problems I had with my knee I still play rugby without strapping or any kind of knee support (after a rigorous rehab program) with little to no pain. I stil have the odd day where it will be sore perhaps after standing around for a while but I haven't had any swelling since it was fixed. You're knee may not have healed correctly so I suggest seeing a professional about it.
