Q: Knee pain and collapsing

I have several problems with, I am assuming, my knee muscles. I am 40 years old and have been having leg problems since I was a teenager. I used to have aching calf muscles after walking several hundred yards that stopped me walking until the pain went away. That was probably 'growing pain'. Had x-rays but never found any problems.
About 10 years ago I started having problems getting up from a crouch and felt pain behind my knees and needed to push on something to get upright again.
Five years ago the pain was unbearable in both my knees and I was injected behind the patella with something. The pain went away.
Within the last 5 years the pain has come and gone, switching between knees. Not weather related. Now, if I step on a tiny stone or don't get my footing correctly, my legs will buckle and I will collapse and I am unable to stop myself from falling. I cannot stand upright from crouching without help and if I do fall I have to spread my legs as far as I can and try to gain height by pushing with my arms on my knees.
I had an MRI but unable to find a problem. At work I need to bend often and due to my problem if I drop anything I have to bend over but without bending my knees which is very awkward.
After sitting for a while I need to stand up for several seconds before I can walk due to stiffness.
Recently I bought a Bowflex system to try to build muscles in my legs but even on the lowest weight setting I cant curl my legs up to start training.
It feels to me that this is a unique problem that no-one can help me with and I am desperate to get better so I can enjoy my life again. Recently I saw a new shoe that had been clinically tested and it had balls attached to the soles that had to be calibrated every month and it sounded like it might help me.
Does anyone else have similar problems or experience with my type of symptoms and what works for you? Also I am interested in the shoe that I discussed earlier if anyone knows where to get help with that therapy.
Pretty desperate now and I appreciate any help at all.
