Q: Knee pain after injury
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 5th, 2009
I injured my knee 3 and a half months ago and in that time the pain has gotten worse and now the pain is quite bad with no relief. I want to know what my next step should be? (I explained the whole story in the "Explain current medical condition" section below)

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth's Ask a Doctor forum.

The pain that is persisting in your case is probably due to an off track patella or a patella that slips from its place.
If there is a proper dislocation then it can damage the underside of the kneecap and the end of the thighbone. This can lead to pain and arthritis. Arthroscopic surgery can correct this condition.

If the dislocation is not permanent and physiotherapy is not helping, then braces can be tried to hold the patella in position. Cycling is a good way to correct this problem.

This problem may not respond to anti-inflammatory drugs as is seen in your case. Also you would benefit more if you could locate a sports medicine specialist in your area and take treatment under his guidance.

If nothing helps then surgery is the last option. It is not possible to give a confirmed treatment option on net. So discuss the possibilities mentioned with your treating doctor. Hope this helps. Take care!
