Thanks for the info and detail in your post. Trumanpocket, whenever someone states that it is at night that they have back pain I immediately suspect the mattress. Not always the case I know, but it is the case more than you would believe.

As an example - For me, the ONLY way I can get even a fairly decent night's rest is to sleep on a air mattress. A regular mattress is pure H#ll for my back. I found out years ago that pillowtops are the absolute worst. Next "worst" mattress is one of those very firm types.

Mind telling us what type of mattress you sleep on and for how long you have had the mattress? Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. I too have been through many mattresses. I was sleeping on one of those foam mattresses than forms to your body. That was a big mistake. Got rid of that any my back got a lot better. I now have a firm mattress that is 6 months old. It has helped my back.

At night I have tried different position to ease the pain in my knee (which is the worst) and it does not help. I do have the hip pain sometimes during the day after sitting for a while and it hurts to stand up, sometime it takes me two or three tries.

I have had shooting pains in my knee that is from my back, but never this ache. I would prefer the shooting pains because they do not last as long.

Before I start going to different doctors (seems doctors only specialize in one part of the body and don't want to talk about any orther part) I would like to find out if anyone has experienced the same.

From the information given I would say that you have possibly suffered what is sometimes called a chronic soft tissue inuries to right side of lumber spine, which could have been present before the surgery. The surgery could aggravate and bring about more symptoms from this pre-existing problem due to lower back balace changing.It is a common misconception that back pain always stems from the pressure of a slipped disc or a trapped nerve. This is misleading, the main cause of pain is soft tissue inflammation stimulating nerves, causing the pain signal.

I would agree that physical therapy, intensive acupuncture, and mobilization exercises can be helpful

Thanks for the added info.

"I now have a firm mattress that is 6 months old." The big words "firm mattress".

A year and a half ago i helped my daughter move to another city. She was kind and offered her bed for me to sleep in because even at that time my back was hurting. Next morning she asked how I slept. I could not lie - I was in pain for most of the night in her FIRM bed. About the worst night's sleep I have had.

My wife had slept on an air mattress. She told me to give it a try for the next night. I did. WOW, what a difference. I slept much MUCH better and NO back pain the next morning. Since that day I have slept on an air mattress. Oh yes, it does take a few nights to get the air pressure just right.
