Q: Kidney tumors and kidney size
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 1st, 2008
The doctor recommended to have operations, however, I would like to cure it with Chinese medication. Question is - do I really have to take the operation? If I dont take the operation, what would be next? What is the normal size of a normal kidney? Someone say is only 4 cm in length.

Given the data you provided (enlarged tumors) an operation is recommended. Any other treatment you have already tried is obviously inefficient. If an operation is not performed, the tumors might grow enough to create metastasis in close or distant organs.

The approximate kidney dimensions are: length about 120 mm, width about 60 mm. The kidney has two parts: a cortex in the outer part and pelvis in the inner part. The cortex is the functional part of the kidney that actually creates the urine. The pelvis is the hollow part of the kidney where the initial urine is collected. The approximate dimensions of the pelvis are: length about 60 mm, width about 30 mm.

The pelvis can be enlarged, thus indicating atrophy of the cortex.
