Q: Kidney Stent

I had a kidney stone removed in May of 2008, They put a stent in. I followed up 2 weeks later and they said everything was fine.
It is now June 2009 and I just found out that the stent should have been removed. No one told me it needed to be removed. Neither my operating doctor, nor the doctor who did my follow up. It is not common knowledge to know this when you have no idea about stents or when you are not informed properly. What do I do? It has been in for over a year, and I have had 13 urinary tract infections since the surgery and not one doctor noticed that this could be the problem. All of them were told about the stent and not one person told me it should be removed. It wasn't until May 18th 2009 that I had X-rays for my back that the ER doctor asked how long I had the stent. When I told him, he looked shocked and told me that he is not a urologist, but he is positive that it should have been removed. So now what do I do. Do I go to the ER and should I return to the hospital that performed the original procedure?
Please HELP.
Thank You,
Nicci

Yes, the stent should have been removed. They're only supposed to be in there for a few weeks at most. I just had a stent in each side and they were both inserted and removed under general anesthetic.
