I'm a 20-year old male and on August 10th I went to bed early feeling very tired and awoke early in the morning feeling very lightheaded. I went to the toilet to discover I had brown urine. I went to the doctors and few days later and i explained that I have been feelin short sharp pains in both kidney area and pelvis. She did a dipstick test and discovered some blood in urine.

She said it was probably a kidney infection, the next few weeks I took two courses of antibiotics. The pain I had was short bursts of pain that lasted a second then disappeared. The doctors sent my urine off for testing, results came back showing nothing wrong, however I had still been suffering from these little twinges which occured in random places on both sides, from the kidney, to the pelvis or lower back. Some days they barely occur and some days they happen quite a lot.

My doctor told me it was probably muscular pains, however I still get blood in my urine now and again. Today it was dark brown again. I'm still getting short sharp pains in both kidneys.

Basically, I'm absolutely terrified now. I've convinced myself I have some sort of kidney cancer as I dont know what else it could be, it doesnt seem like kidney stones because the pain isnt severe and I havent passed any stones. I'm going back to the doctors on monday to try and seek some specialist advice because i'm worrying myself so much.

Hi

I'm glad you are going to the doctor on Monday. Please give us an update. I hope the doctor will do a 24 hour urine collection then blood work when you return with the urine collection. Also if your doctor does a scan of your kidneys starting with an ultrasound to see if there are any sign of stones in there. you can have stones linger in the kidneys for a long time and the pain can come and go.

I know this is easy to say but try not to stress to much. Relax, take it easy and drink fluids to keep yourself hydrated.

Best Wishes..Smile

Sounds like a stone to me. I've had them before. Drink about 2 quarts of water per day until you can see the doctor.

Hey.

So I went doctors and I told him my problems and he did an examination of my abdomen and kidney area and said it seemed ok. I'm giving another urine sample and going for a blood test tomorrow morning, also he's booking me in at my local hospital for an ultrasound.

Keep in mind, some small stones may not show up on xray or ultrasound. The only indication is a widening of the ureter on x-ray just above the stone. Assuming it IS a stone, and assuming it has passed below the kidney.

Has the pain started to localize to one side of your abdomen or the other?

So I got my blood test results back yesterday and everything was fine, no anemia, protein level normal, kidney functioning normally. I was relieved. So just gonna wait for ultrasound now to see if that sheds any light onto it, maybe it will show some stones.

An ultrasound may or may not show a stone and the only way to know if a person passes a stone is by peeing in a strainer (one that is used specially & issued by your doctor to catch a stone when it leaves your body but before it lands in the toilet).

Also a stone can disappear on it's own without leaving the body (depends on what it consists of, stone that is). However if a stone has jagged edges it can cause pain and blood, especially when it is on the move.

What doctor are you seeing, family doctor or a urologist?

Another concern is if a stone becomes logged if this is the case you need to get to the ER ASAP. This means the stone is blocking the flow of urine from the kidney causing the kidney to develop hydronehprosis.
We have a family history of stones, from myself, my children and my spouse...I know lucky us.. Rolling Eyes

A CT scan might help find a stone if it doesn't show up on an ultrasound. Not all stones show up scans. You can have lingering pain after passing a stone as well, people can get renal colic when they have a stone and can have it without a stone (once the stone passes, even without a prior stone). This pain has sent me to the ER at times.

There are different types of stones and as zig said peeing into a strainer which can be a paint strainer picked up any home improvement store is helpful to catch the stone and if you do catch the stone, give it to your doctor to have it analyzed to see what type of stones you are making.

Keep us posted.
