Kidney Cyst

O.K. I will try and make a long story short. Couple weeks ago I had a mri done on my kidneys. Came back as a complex cyst about 4.6 cm. Doctor said probably not cancer and will have another cat scan in about 6 months. I also have blood and the doctor said large volums of protein in my urine (reason for mri and scope). I'm a 38 year old male former smoker as of 2 months ago but I smoke for 20 years. Doctor has refered me to a nephrologist

Anyone have this? Should I be concerned or alarmed? What should I ask the doctor, etc. Any information or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance......

Hello, and thanks for your medical question on eHealthForum.

Based on the history, presence of a complex renal cyst that presents with proteinuria and blood in urine, needs evaluation to rule out possibility of progression to malignancy.

A 4.6 cm complex cyst, could be categorised into Bosniak category II and III, and these are associated with an approximately 18% and 33% chance of being associated with kidney cancer respectively.

Hence an evaluation of the the renal function and your fitness for a partial or complete nephrectomy if needed might be the reason for referring you to a nephrologist.

I hope this helps.
