Q: Key hole surgery for appendix removal

i had key hole surgery to take appendix out and the hole on the left side of belly button has healed up but now there is a hard lump round it

Given the data you provided, it seems likely that the “hard lump” you have noticed around the post-op hole on the left side of the navel is either granulation or connective tissue, formed in the process of the wound healing. The hard lump could also be the presence of a post-op incision hernia, although this is extremely rare complication after laparoscopic surgeries.

However, it is hard to say what this lump is exactly, without a visual inspection and palpitation. The current description is unclear and a doctor will need to know whether the area is inflamed or red, warm, painful, with edema and/or with pus leaking out - which are all signs of bacterial infection of the wound. If this is the case, your family doctor might order some basic blood laboratory tests as well as a swab from the incision site and, if positive for infection, she might consider prescribing some oral and local antibiotics.

You might consider follow up with the surgeon who operated and/or a visit to your general physician.
