Q: Just diagnosed with TMJ

I was hit in the jaw by a 2x6 and this has brought about TMJ, had no jaw problems before being hit a few months ago. No jaw evaluation was done at the time even though I complained about pain. I had other problems and so much pain and was on so many meds that I sorta forgot about the jaw, until Saturday when I had terrible pain under my left ear and had a hard time opening my jaw and it was the first time I noticed a loud click. I now realize that I have had other symptoms since the accident, like headaches and ear pain.

Saw a oral surgeon who specializes in TMJ today, setting me up for a splint, along with oral cortisone, which I told him I was just coming off of for an ankle injury.

He also wants me to do get an MRI, this is going to cost me even more money, that I do not have.

I still am suffering from a severe grade 2 ankle sprain from another fall I just took, so my posture right now is not great as I have to keep my leg up off the floor. Not sure is the use of crutches helped aggravate my problem.

I did not realize how complicated this problem is until I got home.

Any advice I would be grateful for.

hey Im sorry that you have to go through this. Treat your jaw like it is sprained. treat it like your ankle. ice it rest it, and eat soft foods. Im glad that you are being proactive about it. Some leave it and it gets worse. some find that if they had only started treating it right away it wouldnt have deteriorated to what it is. (like me) any way. if you need anything let me know. im always here. so just give me a hollar.

Do you think the MRI is really necessary at this point?

He wants it for future treatment he said.

well, i was treated for 14 years with out an mri. I dont think its necessary but it would help him treat you esp if there is displaced discs, fractures etc. if you think its better to wait because of your financial situation thats perfectly fine. im sure that he can wait. tell him you dont have the money. im sure that he will understand. you can save for it. and then do it when you think its necessary
