Q: Joint pain and osteoarthritis
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 20th, 2008
ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO, MY FOURTH FINGER STARTED TO SWELL AND WAS PAINFUL. AT FIRST I PUT THIS DOWN TO MY DOGS COLLAR GOT CAUGHT AROUND THE FINGER. AFTER A COUPLE OF WEEK I WENT TO THE DOCTOR WHO SAID IT WAS PROBABLY ARTHRITIS AND TO TAKE NEUROFEN. I DID THIS FOR A WHILE BUT IT DIDN'T SEEM TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I NOW CANNOT BEND THIS FINGER PROBABLY AND SOMETIMES HAVE STIFFNESS IN MY OTHER HAND. I ALSO HSAVE QUITE A LOT OF HEEL AND ANKLE PAIN, ESPECIALLY IN THE MORNINGS AND AFTER I HAVE BEEN SITTING DOWN A WHILE - ONCE I AM UP AND ABOUT, THIS PAIN DISAPPEARS.

I AM FINDING THIS IS MAKING ME QUITE DEPRESSED AND REALLY WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE SOLUTION COULD BE. AT THE MOMENT, TYPING THIS IS REALLY QUITE PAINFUL.

I WAS THINKING OF BUIYING A MAGNETIC BRACELET AND START TAKING COD LIVER OILS TABLETS.

I FEEL I NEED TO GO TO A ANOTHER DOCTOR BUT NOT QUITE SURE WHAT TYPE OF DOCTOR- OI HAVE PRIVATE INSURANCE AND LIVE IN SPAIN AND WORK IN SPAIN.

ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE?

Arthritis Answer A3882
According to your symptoms (swollen and painful finger, stiffness in the other hand, ankle pain) it is likely that the appropriate doctor for your condition would be an orthopedist. According to your symptoms and age you could be experiencing osteoarthritis. It is a degenerative disorder of the joints. An X-ray image can give you the possible diagnosis.
