Q: Joint pain and general malaise

June '08 I fractured my left elbow (slightly displaced radial head) I am still experiencing pain in that elbow, pins and needles in little finger and ring finger and pain in knuckle between index and middle finger when I try to grip something. I had nerve conduction tests yesterday and the results show a trapped ulnar nerve and the nerve to my index finger is 'dead'.

In October I woke one morning to sever pain at the top of my right arm which within a couple of days had spread into my shoulder. X-rays came back as satisfactory.

Late December, early January I started to experience pain randomly in all my joints, shooting pains and aching that keeps me awake most of the night and also interferes with every day life (hurting to stand or walk, struggling to open doors, grip etc. And a general feeling of malaise, shivery then hot. After a few weeks of seeing no signs of improvement, only a worsening of the symptoms I went to see my GP

Doctor ran some blood tests which came back showing high level of white cells and inflammation. He put me on some anti biotics and to my surprise 4 days in, the pain started to ease and I felt much better in myself. However, 2 weeks after finishing the antibiotic course and the pain has started to return and I'm feeling extremely tired, weak and fatigued. Using any limb makes my muscles ache, even typing this is making my arms feel heavy and causing shooting pains in my wrists, fingers, both elbows and both shoulders.

I'm due back at the doctors this Thursday to have my bloods done again and I see my GP on Monday as he is going to give me a steroid injection in my left shoulder. The hospital is going to operate on the trapped nerve in my elbow BUT, what about all this other pain and general feeling of malaise? What could possibly be going on inside my body to cause all of this?

Any replies will be gratefully received

Rhuematoid arthritis?
It could possibly be rhuematoid arthritis or even fibromyalgia. I am in the process of being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. My pain does not seem as severe as your pain, but it is still present. I would look into these two conditions though... Very possible diagnosis!

Hi & thanks for your reply.

My bloods came back this time low red cells, white cells ok and inflammation is lower than first test.

Injection in my shoulder has made that pain more bearable providing I don't overuse it. I am starting physio for that next Monday (2nd March) an also back at fracture clinic that day too, to discuss the operation to move the ulnar nerve to release it.

The RA bloods came back as negative so it isn't that.

I've just had a week of complete rest and pleased to say all the other pain has eased but I still feel like I want to sleep all the time.

Oh well, will see how I get on now I'm back at work.

Thanks again for the reply
