Job hunting

I've been looking for a job since May and still haven't found one. I had 2 interviews this morning and I didn't get one, the other I still don't know about but I'm not likely to get it because it might clash with my uni hours. All I'm looking for is bar work, which I have experience in, or some sort of admin thing, just a part-time job. I don't want to work in a clothes shop or anything like that because I've done it before and didn't like it. I quit my last job in April to concentrate on my exams and because of travel difficulties and thought it won't be too long before I get another but how wrong I was.

It's not like I haven't tried though. Over 40 jobs I've applied for, and most of them don't bother to get back in touch with me at all. This job I heard about before said I wasn't confident enough, but how am I meant to be confident when every rejection just knocks me back further??
I really need a job, I have no money at all at the minute which means I can't go anywhere with friends so I'm missing out and all I can do all day and night is stay in or go to my boyfriends. I really don't want to go back to my last job because I hated the place, the job was fine but the management team were so self-absorbed and it's such a health forum place.
I feel so down about this.

dont get yourself down over this---i had the same problem--people that say they need you immediately call you 6 months after the fact--it stinks

anyone have tips on getting a job? you know you may want to apply with your government to see if they can help you with money and finding a job. they do that here in the us but im not sure about the uk

In an interview, it’s tough to keep sounding confident when it seems like you haven't gotten a call back, but you really have to. Don't let it bother you and just keep your head up.

Think of it like your marketing yourself, so when you are at an interview for bar work, play up all the skills you have that would be beneficial for that position-- from being able to keep your cool in stressful (busy) situations to always being able to have an easy conversation with someone. They usually ask some question that asks just why you applied, why you think you'd be good for the job, or at the very least having you tell them about yourself.

Practice marketing yourself in front of the mirror--- I know, it sounds lame. But it's really helped me. I have a really hard time sounding calm and confident when I speak with people I don't know, so when I know it's something I'm going to have to do and it’s important, I typically outline and practice everything I KNOW I'm going to say. Practicing in a mirror helps you maintain eye contact with your possible employer. You could even ask a friend to help.

Thanks for the tips. It's just frustrating when I feel I did ok and came across alright, like yesterday I made a point of chatting to them a bit to make a good impression but it gets me nowhere. It's like a snowball effect, I keep getting rejected and makes me lose the confidence that I need!
Also, I've sent applications into pubs and bars and most dont reply even though I have experience in it.
The government can't offer me any help in terms of money because I'm still a student, and I get my student loan in September so I can't wait lol but I also want a job because I want to buy a car soon. I almost wish I had finished my education so I could go for a full time job which might be easier to get.

Well, you're certain they are hiring?
You could also make sure to hand the application directly to the manager.

Yeah, they have adverts in the window or on the jobcentre site. I apply to some by post, but mostly will hand a CV in myself. I've handed a few speculative applications as well, but I'm pessimistic. There's a few places taking Christmas staff on now so I might have a better chance.

Do you call back after a couple days of putting your application in, speaking with the manager to make sure they have received your app? I always do that. One place told me they gave me an interview solely based on the fact that I called and asked.

Hmmm no I don't do that. I think I will, sounds like a good idea.
