Hi,

I have been out of work since past 4 days. Doc says I've jaundice. I got a liver function test done. My bilirubin level is about 9, while sgot is 566 and sgpt 1600. Should I get hepatitis tests done? My eyes are a bit yellow, urine is brownish yellow. Other than that my diet is fine and feel hungry normally. No fever at all and tht stool is pale whitish.. I've been having gluconD, sugar cane juice, and strictly home food fr the last 5 days. Do I need to be worried about the high sgot, bilirubin, sgpt?? Do I need to get hospitalized? I'm 23, 120 kgs male with no previous medical history.

Hello and thank you for posting your medical question on E health forum. ‎

ALT (also called alanine aminotransferase or SGPT) is found in the liver only. The normal range ‎of ALT levels is between 5 IU/L to 60 IU/L High levels of ALT (1600 IU/L) is an indication of ‎liver inflammation and/or damage. ‎

In your case, the severe elevation of both the bilirubin and enzymes is more likely due to hepatitis associated with either viral infections (Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B or C).

Hence you might consult with a doctor, who can examine you and order for hepatitis serology panel, and a ultrasound which will help to make a proper diagnosis.

In case your symptoms are mild (as mentioned), out patient treatment may be sufficient. Only in case of severe symptoms and inability to have food, will hospitalisation be necessary.

I hope this helps to clear your doubts.
