Q: ITP and blood vessel thinning

I just got a call regarding my elderly grandmother, who up until the last few months has been very healthy, even though living in a care facility.

She is 88.

The call we recieved was about a seizure she had today, and the doctors have said that it is ITP, but then gone on to explain that it is actually blood vessels thinning around the bones.

We are a bit confused as to what he actually means as ITP and what he is explaining is totally different.

Can someone shed some light on this, they have advised that after this seizure she will never recover and that there is only limited time before it may become fatal.

Any advice would be great.

Have you been able to get further information on your grandmother's health? I see it's been a while since you posted. Did she have symptoms of ITP, such as:

Bruising
Nosebleed or bleeding in the mouth
Bleeding into the skin - also called pinpoint red spots or petechial rash

It doesn't look like blood vessel thinning is a sign of ITP. I would follow up with the doctor for a definitive diagnosis.

yes she has had some bleeding into the skin, and one particular cut that has not healed and is weeping continually, and bleeding a small amount during the day.

She is very weak and can not speak, not have the strength to lift her hands.

I'm sorry to hear that your grandma is still in poor health. I don't know a lot about ITP, but here is a very informative website that I found. Maybe it will help: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/ar ticle/000535.htm

Have the doctors given any further diagnosis?
