Itchy Vagina - virgin ?

I'm a young adult and have recently started opening doors sexually with my boyfriend. We have not had sex, but have used hands and had some oral intercourse. Our genital areas have not come into any contact.
Last weekend he had his hands 'down there' rather roughly, but not painfully.
Over the next few days my vagina was a little red and rather sore. But also itchy.
It is not as sore now but is still itchy.
I cannot fathom what is wrong with me.
