My 7 year old daughter is suffering from an extremely itchy tongue on and off for 2 years. The doctors are calling her a "medical mystery." She has been to a dentist, an oral surgeon, 2 allergists (one being the Chief of Allergy at Children's Hosp in Boston). No one can find any reason for this problem. The allergists say that they have never heard of a person that has only an itchy tongue with no other complaints. All her skin allergy tests were negatives upon both visits one year apart. We have tried benadryl, zyrtec, flovent. The PCP is thinking perhaps it is Oral Allergy syndrome, but also feels that it is not a typical case because she tested negative for the common allergens associated with this syndrome. Next week we are seeing an ENT. It comes and goes and seems to be gone all winter. We also tried keeping a food diary for a while but found no consistencies there. She has undergone two sets of blood tests and all is okay there. She cries a lot and is misery. When she is suffering, she scratches her tongue using her teeth which then creates white sores on her tongue. Nothing helps and no one has been able to diagnose the problem. My husband and I are heartbroken. We don't know how to help her. She often says she wishes someone would just remove her tongue.

If you have any information, please pass it on to me.
Thank you so much!
Jody

Extremely eHealthy
hi, here is something u might try; get some probiotics in capsules; mix some with yogurt; just plain yogurt.
in a single serving put maybe TEN capsules and stir well
also leave the yogurt out for a bit to get closer to room temp before adding the probiotics.
u might have seen commercials where people talk about colon health or G.I. health with yogurt; this is the same only u r going to super-charge the yogurt with what is already in it.
won't cost anything really and is good for u anyway
good luck

Itchy Tongue as well
Hi Jody,

My mom just found your post and sent it to me because I have the exact same problem as your daughter. Extremely itchy tongue with nothing else wrong and none of the doctors I have been to can diagnose it. Mine has been going on for over a year on and off. We have tried everything as well from different medicines, to scratch tests, to blood tests, and nothing comes up to explain this. My doctor is now thinking that it is eczema on my tongue. Have you had any luck with finding answers since you posted this??

Itchy tongue
Hi Jody,
My daughter is also having an itchy tongue. She is 6 years old and has had it on and off for about a year. She is completely miserable when she has it and I feel so bad for her. She cries and keeps itching it with her teeth. I have also noticed on 2 occasions that she has a rash on the outside of her mouth with it as well as a low grade fever. One time she was sick with other symptoms and then the itchy tongue started. The doctor said it may be an infection. He gave us an antibiotic and she said it helped. Her tongue was still itchy, but it would come and go and was less annoying. Any more news?

Is there anyone who has any answers to this question? CapeMom; Jody...have you found any answers? My daughter is suffering so badly with this. Tonight she cried, "I wish I had a normal tongue like everyone else!" Then she said she wished she "wasn't a person any more"...this is breaking my heart and her spirit. If anyone has any answers, please reply!
Thanks,
Laurie

Itchy Tongue
*As I'm Sitting Here, Sucking On a Towel!*:/
Which is the Only thing that Seems to Bring Relief to My Itchy Tongue it is Also, a *Catch 22!
While it Subsides the Intense Urge or Need to Itch My Tongue With My Teeth to the Point I'm in Tears! It Brings Much Needed RELIEF!! Unfortunately, It's Short Lived! The Instant Air Hits My Tongue When I Have to Move to a Newer Drier Spot On the Towel...It Instantly Begins to Itch Again!*'(
I've Been Suffering With this for Some 3-4 Years Now and No End in Sight!
I Will Say, it Triggers Most Often in the Summer Months and When I'm Under a Great Deal of Added Stress. I've Read it May Be Due to a PH Balance Upset, Bacteria...It's All Been A Painful, Vicious Cycle and As I Said...No End In Sight!*:/

ITCHY TONGUE
ITCHY TONGUE

My son suffers from exactly the same thing. He is 6 now and this has been going off and on for over a year. He is in terrible pain and we have tried everything from allergy meds, probiotics, vitamins(B especially) which worked at relieving the symptoms only once, pain medicine, natural remedies....pretty much everything. The doctors of course have no clue, but at certain points it is so bad that he can't go to school. If someone knows anything, even if it is to relieve the pain, I would be greatfull.

Protien allergy??
Could it be an allergy to protiens in the enviornment and food?? I was diagnoesed with an oral allergy. Although I do not have an itchy tounge it became painful to eat. My tounge would become so sore, it was awful. I am taking a nasal spray which has helped. I am not completley symptom free but I am able to manage it alot better.

Itchy tongue
My 7-year old son had the same.

The doctor suggested stopping him from eating CHOCOLATE.

We did and he has not had an itchy tongue since.

This sounds exactly the same as what my 7-year old boy had. He had no symptoms other than an itchy tongue and he would get sores from scratching it.
In our case it seems to be that he is alergic/sensitive to a particular chocolate/hezelnut spread called Nutella. Whether it is the chocolate or the nuts we're not sure, we are slowly letting him eat small amounts of chocolate and it seems fine, so it does seem to be this Nutella spread.
I wonder if your girl regularly eats anything similar?

itchy tongue
i am 26 and have an itchy tongue also. i see most posts are about children, but i have had this since i was a child, and still have no answers. i have tried a food journal to rule out food allergies. i have asked doctors.i have suggested to drs that maybe it is psoriasis or lichen planus. they didn't think so. i have lyme disease, but wasn't diagnosed with that until much later in life after the itching began. i often chew on my tongue so much it bleeds because it is so itchy. no other parts itch. it's only sometimes, but usually once a day at least. no one has helped me! crazy.
