I had my tonsils removed a few weeks ago and was prescribed the generic version of percocet. At the height of the pain, I was taking 8 pills a day (2 every 6 hours, as prescribed). This lasted for about a week before I quit taking the pills. I've taken opiates before and never suffered any side effects, but this time around it made me itchy all over. It wasn't bad at first but got gradually worse. Naturally I assumed that when I quit taking the medicine, this itching would stop, but it's now been a week since I've taken a single percocet and I'm still itchy all over my body, particularly on my stomach. It's terrible and I just want it to stop, but I can't see my doctor because the surgery took place over winter break and I'm now back in school in a different city. Is this normal?

On a related note, I'm also having trouble both falling asleep and staying asleep. I'm thinking this is because my body got used to percocet as a sleep-inducer (it knocked me out for at least a few hours every time I took it), but again, I'm wondering when this will stop.

Hi MLDubya and welcome to ehealth: The itching is because you are allergic to this drug...My husband has this same problem...The problem being you quit just like that instead of bringing the dose down gradually...Talk to your Pharmacist about some over the counter Allergy pills...They should relieve this problem...Tell him/her what happened with the Percocet...I think this will solve it...

If you continue having problems, perhaps you can see a physician at your school...Take care...

Thank you Caroline! To clarify, I went from 8 pills a day to four and then to two, but I didn't draw out the easing off for very long - I think I went from 8 per day to none at all in a period of 3, maybe 4 days. I'm not saying that stopping too quickly isn't the problem, but I wasn't very clear in the first post so I wanted to correct myself, in case anyone else has any ideas.
