Q: Isoniazid and side effects
asked by: Anonymous on December 12th, 2008
Hi, I live in india and went to the UK in 2007 where after 5 months i contracted TB of the lymphatic system which was disseminated. It turns out i had hyperthyroidism just before the TB started. I lost 24 kgs in a month. It was really terrible, physically and emotionally draining. The doctors took a long time diagonising the illness and went to the extent of a biopsy since they suspected cancer. Meanwhile I decided enough is enough and flew back to India where the doctors immediately did all the tests they wanted ( x ray, CT scan , ultrasound etc.) and i was put on isoniazid, rifampicin , pyrazinamide and other antibiotics.
Luckily I didnt have any bodily scars or such things but the biopsy left a permanent mark!
Although my symptoms vanished within a couple of days and was starting to feel better, the side effects of Isoniazid kicked in and i was hit by severe neuropathy in both my feet. It was the most painful thing i endured during the whole ordeal for about 3 weeks. Then the doctor stopped Isoniazid. But i am still recovering from the neuropathy with medicines and 5 months of physioth erapy.
Though i sometimes feel angry about a lot of things since all this could be avoided at many stages, if I had got proper treatment I am grateful that i am back to leading a normal life and I feel that much more stronger at the end of this all, although i am in my 9th month of medication (hopefully my last!) i am grateful that it worked out. I pray everyday for those suffering from TB and I would like to say just maintan a positive attitude and stick to a routine by doing something you like and treat yourself with respect and you'll feel a lot better. Remember, what doesnt kill you makes you stronger God bless you all! take care
