Many forms of heart disease are silent. This means that there are no signs or symptoms until the disease worsens. Sometimes the disease can worsen suddenly and even lead to death within minutes and hours. Therefore depending only on the presence of signs and symptoms as an indicator of heart disease is not reliable.

Certain people are more likely to be at risk and these groups should undergo routine screening on a regular basis to pick up the early stages of heart disease. This includes any person with one or more of the following risk factors.

Over the age of 40 years
Family history of heart disease
Cigarette smoking
Alcohol abuse
Sedentary lifestyle
Obese or even if overweight
Diabetes mellitus
High blood cholesterol
High blood pressure

This position is not as simple as it seems. First of all, fortunately, silent heart disease is less common than is here suggested. Indeed, one of the ways to protect ones health is never to ignore symptoms. The body often sends us symptoms that, unfortunately, are too often ignored. Routine screening on a regular basis is now being actively debated in medical circles, and the merit of such procedures is under discussion.
I certainly agree that cigarette smoking is anathema, that one should seek a proper weight, that blood cholesterol, LDL and sugar levels should be in the desirable ranges, that blood pressure should be normal, that regular exercise is important and that avoiding undue stress is desirable. And alcohol intake should be moderate.
