About 7 years ago I figured that I clench my teeth in my sleep, and I have been wearing a night guard since. In the last year or so the pain has become very significant and I feel it completely on the left side of my face (the bad-jaw side) all the way from my sinuses (above my nose) around my eyes down to my chin, to the back of my ears, down my neck, and even the back of my head. I usually wake up with a lot of neck and jaw pain and the pain is even worse when I wear the night guard. Almost every morning I feel that I am about to get a sinus infection, because I have a lot of pain in those facial orifices. Also, I have realized is that I don't press my teeth on each other very hard, because I wear a soft night guard and if I were pressing my teeth it would be hard to take the guard off or it would have been damaged in the morning, and that has never happened. I think I subconsciously flex my jaw muscles in my sleep. I started getting massages once a week and my massage therapist recommended that I take magnesium for muscle spasm. Recently I have developed a lot of ear pain, and my hearing in my left ear is changing (it's not getting worse but I feel muscles flexing in my ear as I hear and sharp notes hurt my ear). I am getting concerned about this. I am wondering if what I experience is something other than TMJ, like a tumor, an ear infection, infection in lymph nodes (the left side of my face feels heavier), an abcessed tooth (I don't have pain in any tooth upon chewing or tapping, just sensitivity at times, but I do have a lot of pain in my jaw that I can't exactly locate and I feel as if my jaw muscles are painfully stretching when I chew or move my jaw). Is this TMJ or could it be something else? How can I help the pain? I am due for a dental visit and an xray very soon which would hopefully rule out the abcess. Where should I start about figuring this out? Are these normal symptoms for TMJ? Could TMJ lead to abcess in the teeth? Should I go see an ear-nose-throat doctor? Could TMJ lead to sinus infection? or other facial infections?
Thank you very much.
