Is This Related to Breastfeeding? Posted: 12-29-03 01:40am
I have been breastfeeding my son for the
past 21 months. For the last 10 months I
have had scaling and flaking of the
areola. The area is red and sometimes
cracks and is very sore. My gyn at first
was not concerned, then he told me that it
was " wear and tear ". Now he says that
he thinks that I have a yeast infection
that is not causing any other symptoms. I
don't think that it is yeast, my son has
no symptoms and I have taken a diflucan
pill and it is still there. Has anyone
ever had this happen?

Your son's saliva may be drying out your
areola's. I have no breastfed however I
do have my nipples pierced and the
constant friction of the rings against my
areola can leave the skin very dry and
cracking, which can be awfully painful. I
use pure vitamin e oil as many times a day
as necessary and it works wonders!
