Q: Is my girlfriend pregnant?

My 18-year-old girlfriend is on birth control. She doesn`t like for me to use a condom even though I tell her it would seem extra safe if I did. For the last, say... 4 months maybe, we have used nothing but the birth control and of course the withdrawal method. This still had me nervous. Anyways, she has missed her period and it`s been over a month now. She keeps saying that her breasts feel sore and that she thinks this is a sign that her period will be coming soon. But it doesn`t. She normally has an irregular cycle anyways. For whatever reason, she says that usually she starts her period every month and two weeks. Also, she says that a few times a year she will miss her period altogether. She missed it about a couple months ago as well with one in between. I guess what is worrying me is that she keeps saying that her breasts are sore when she is not starting her period after she missed it altogether. Is this normal? She doesn`t seem as worried as me but it`s killing me!

How long has she been on birth control?

And if you don't feel comfortable with just birth control pills then wear a condom. You need to protect yourself too!

well if she is on birth control and taking it correctly (every day at around the same time every day) then i dont think she is pregnant. there is always a chance though especially if she isnt taking her pills correctly. i think a relationship is between two people, especially a sexually active one, and if you feel more comfortable wearing a condom you need to enforce that. yes it probably feels better for her and both of you without one, but if you feel more protected, then wear one. don't let her tell you no. talk to her about it. but maybe buy her a home pregnancy test and have her take it to put your mind more at rest. sometimes women react to the pill differently than others so its possible that the pill has made her a little irregular i guess? i would just maybe talk to her, and have her talk to her doctor about why her period is still irregular even when shes on the pill.

Thanks guys. Yeah we`re trying to work something out. A bunch her friends and her sister have become pregnant this past year. You think she`d be the one who`s worried. Haha. But yeah a co-worker of mine and some other people I know have just found out the`yre going to be daddies... or go through it again depending on the person. What`s got me worried is that almost every story I have heard like that the last couple months was a case where they used birth control or other protection and it failed. I guess all this has got me on edge.

But to answer your question maddie34, I think she`s been on birth control about 3 months now. Maybe 4. She says she`s been having trouble getting it to time out correctly with her period. I don`t really get how that works, but it makes sense to her apparently.

Also, she took an at-home pregnancy test twice, one the evening we bought it and one the next morning as soon as she woke up the next morning. Both showed negative. Her period is supposed to be any day now, but it had the potential to start a few days ago I guess.
She insists I`m worrying over nothing. Maybe I am. I dunno.

you should be good, every doctor i see tells me to continue using a secondary contraceptive for seven days until the birth control fully takes effect.
and if she's been on the pill for almost four months, i'm pretty sure she isn't pregnant, especially if both pregnancy tests came back negative.
as for the timing issues, that's what happened to me, it sucks, but her period will eventually get back on track.
