Q: Is it stress or TMJ ?

It started when I started experiencing headaches at work to the point where I would have to take Advil daily just to get through my shift, now I'm starting to feel pressure in my jaw. One day the pressure would be along the jaw line, sometimes up near my cheeks or also on the roof of my mouth or near the top of my throat. Tonight, the pressure was accompanied by a dull ache, but I only felt the ache once... most of the time it's mild to moderate pressure.

I don't experience shortness of breath, nausea, or pressure/pain in any other part of the body with the jaw pressure, and the pressure comes and goes as it pleases. I could accelerate my heartbeat and not experience anything at all so I don't think it's a heart attack, but I could be wrong. I do have a very stressful job that I am unhappy with and I have been battling anxiety off an on for the past few years... I've just never experienced these symptoms with anxiety before so I am not sure if it is caused by stress or if the jaw pressure is something else and that is triggering anxiety.

I do notice that when my mind is off of it, I hardly experience any symptoms until it pops in my head for a moment then I will start noticing it. I take aspirin for the headaches, but the aspirin doesn't have much affect on the jaw pressure. i've had the jaw pressure for about a week and a half thinking that it would go away on its own, but it doesn't seem to be doing so.

Any explination or advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like you are under alot of stress in your job. Stress will tense up you body and your jaw to the point of pain.

Yeah, you could be clenching your jaw during the day when you are feeling stress. THat used to happen to me a lot and I got headaches daily for years. I also found out I was anemic, which contributed to the headaches as well.

I started by making a conscious effort to keep my jaw loose on a daily basis, taking breaks to massage it or stretch it, and lightly holding my tongue right behind my top teeth (so you can't clench your jaw). It worked for me, but I also fixed the anemia problem which might have had more to do with it!

My suggestion is to find some good relaxation techniques you can do during work, while you're driving, things like that. Just quick little stretches or breathing exercises.
