Q: Is it MS?

Aged around 16/17 I had a sharp stabbing pain which started from the centre of my chest and moved on to the left side. Prior to the pain I had a headache, located more towards the back of the left side of my head which became worse as the stabbing chest pain began. The sharp pain in the chest was accompanied by excessive sweating, shivering and numbness and pins and needles in the left side of the body. sharp pain in the chest went away shortly, but the The I could'nt speak during when it all occurred. I was concious throughout. The headache, numbness and pins and needles remained for a bit longer. The whole thing must've lasted around 10 mins. I was exhausted and felt very weak in the legs afterwards, almost as though I could'nt walk.

I've experienced some new/different symptoms since, ie. uncontrollable eye movement accompanied by the headache and weakness and senselessness in the legs/feet. The sharp pain in the chest has not re-occurred but there has been a marked worsening of my gait and posture as well as an increased need to pass urine very frequently. A test for diabetes was negative. I get fatigued very easily and find it difficult to remember things lately. I cannot stand the heat either.

Doctors were baffled and blamed psychological imbalance, Wilsons disease and panic attacks however these were rejected following tests. A MRI scan of the brain showed white matter lesions in both sides of the brain.

I am to have a MRI of the spine. I'm worried about the lumbar puncture. Please advise, is it MS? Thank you.

According to the MRI-report (white matter lesions) it could be multiple sclerosis but you need more medical investigations, like lumbar puncture and evoked potentials test, to prove MS.

I disagree, lumbar puncture is not necessary to rule out or confirm a dx of MS.

Not ever one who has MS has bands however some who are having an active flare may have bands but not all. So a LP is really a waste of time and money for MS as it is truly not needed. Some will argue this but it is ultimately the pt's decision if he / she wants one.

I have had two LP's and no bands and I have 6 lesions on my brain and clinical findings of MS.
