What kind of irritation do you mean? Burning, itching, soreness? If you have a food allergy, this can cause itching in your mouth and throat. Have you had a test done to determine whether or not you have any food allergies?

It sounds like burning tongue syndrome
It's also called burning mouth syndrome and several other names. Here's what I learned from one website:
Symptoms of burning mouth syndrome include:

■A burning sensation that may affect your tongue, lips, gums, palate, throat or whole mouth
■A tingling or numb sensation in your mouth or on the tip of your tongue
■Mouth pain that worsens as the day progresses
■A sensation of dry mouth
■Increased thirst
■Sore mouth
■Loss of taste
■Taste changes, such as a bitter or metallic taste
The pain from burning mouth syndrome typically has several different patterns. It may occur every day, with little pain when you wake but becoming worse as the day progresses. Or it may start as soon as you wake up and last all day. Or pain may come and go, and you may even have some entirely pain-free days.

Whatever pattern of mouth pain you have, burning mouth syndrome symptoms often last for years before proper diagnosis and treatment. In some cases, though, symptoms may suddenly go away on their own or become less frequent. Burning mouth syndrome usually doesn't cause any noticeable physical changes to your tongue or mouth.

This affects mostly older adults, especially women. There are things that can cause or worsen this problems such as overbrushing or scraping your tongue, using tobacco, eating certain foods such as foods containing mint, cinnamon, hot or spicy ingredients, eating or drinking acidic foods or drinks such as tomatoes, orange juice, coffee and soda, hormonal changes, certain medications or dry mouth.
There are several things you can do at home to try and relieve this:
switch toothpaste brands, drink plenty of water, take a multivitamin in case this is caused by a vitamin deficiency, coat your tongue twice daily with toothpaste and leave on for 90 seconds before rinsing with mouth wash
