Q: irritation during sex

I have been having sex for quite awhile now, and find it very difficult to orgasm. My clit becomes irritated very easily (a burning sensation right on the clit) Ive tried 'playing with myself' but this seems to have no effect on me, but doesnt hurt unless I stimulate the clit too much.
I've tried using a vibrator, and end up having very mild but pleasant orgasms, but find that I need to grind against it. Through experimentation, I found that I can achieve the same effect with a hard object that doesnt vibrate, lying face down on the bed...
My boyfriend has also read up on all sorts of techniques which he has tried when going down on me, and they feel nice, but I still get sensitive too easily, unless he goes so mild that it just feels like a comforting massage!
What am I doing wrong?
