I am a mother of 4. We had all of our children close together. They are 6 1/2, 5, 3 and 18 months. I breastfed all of them and after each pregnancy I only had one or two periods and then I got pregnant again. Until this year I have only had a handful of periods because I had been breastfeeding and then would get pregnant right away. Well since I got my period back after the birth of my last baby it has been really irregular. Before it would always be around the same time, always fairly heavy and 7 days long, the 7th day fairly light flow. Well my first one I got back was December 2007. It was 8-9 days long. Ever since then it has been very irregular. The next month, it was short, 4-5 days. Then it started moving. I'd get it a week earlier. Then the next month a week earlier still, and it kept doing that till September, it got back to its regular week. It is also very long. This last menistration cycle started September 22 and just finished yesterday October 2. Thats 11 days. In that time it left for one full day and then came back. It often does that. It will leave for one or even two days and then come back very heavy all of a sudden. While this is very annoying I'm wondering if I should be concerned and get checked out.

Heavy and long periods are technically termed "menorrhagia". Possible causes for menorrhagia include fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), uterine polyps or dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB). I'd suggest that you schedule an appointment with your gynecologist to seek a diagnosis, as the long bleeding seems to be affecting your quality of life and you want answers.
