Irregular periods could be due to organic or functional reasons.
Organic reasons for irregular bleeding could be: genital infection, endometriosis, endometrial polyp, myoma, presence of some functional ovarian cyst, genital tumors, injuries etc.
One functional reason for irregular cycles is a disturbance in the axis hypothalamus-pituitary-ovaries. These 3 organs produce hormones that influence their work. Disturbances in this hormonal axis usually cause lack of ovulation and without ovulation periods are usually irregular. Contraceptive pills (hormonal therapy) are usually given to make the periods regular. Under hormonal therapy cycles will become regular but without ovulation. It is expected that after taking the pills off, the ovulation will be established.
spontaneously and cycles will remain regular. If irregular periods are due to some organic reason, contraceptive pills won’t help.
If irregular periods are heavy and hormonal therapy doesn’t help, explorative curettage is the final solution. Explorative curettage is often a diagnostic and therapeutic tool in the same time.
