An intrauterine device might alter your menstrual period (length, quantity of menstrual blood). It can even cause amenorrhea in certain women (completely missing periods). The periods usually return when the intrauterine device is removed.

The cause for the change in the pattern of your menstrual cycle can not be told without further examination. You might want to visit your gynecologist who might do a pelvic exam and laboratory tests. The results of these tests will tell if further diagnostic procedures are required.
