Q: internal hemorrhoids and rectal bleeding?

I had some rectal bleeding on the 11th and thought it was my period, but then ended up going to see a doctor on the 13th. Basically it's bright red blood on the stool and not mixed in. He said that he's 90% sure that it's hemorrhoids since I'm 24 and gave me a prescription for some medication and suppositories. I am not experiencing any pain or itching, just the bleeding.

So, my question is how long will I continue to bleed? I've also noticed that my stool is smaller than usual and that I have a lot of gas. I'm wondering if my period is causing this or if this is something I should worry about. This is the first time this has happened and I'm just a little freaked out.

Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. About half of all people have hemorrhoids by age 50. The most common symptom of hemorrhoids inside the anus is bright red blood covering the stool, on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl. Symptoms usually go away within a few days.

If you have rectal bleeding you should see a doctor. You need to make sure bleeding is not from a more serious condition such as colorectal or anal cancer. Treatment may include warm baths and a cream or other medicine. If you want to follow up, I'd suggest that you see a G-I specialist.

To manage hemorrhoids, make sure that you're getting LOTS of fibre in your diet to make bowel movements easier. Also, consider trying horse chestnut - the seed extract has been used for hemorrhoids. More information here:
