intermitent pain in left arm, severe left wrist pain

i have had intermitent pain in left arm, also quite regulary awaken in the morning with severe left wrist pain, which dispels shortly after i become mobile!
i am a heavy drinker and smoker, so these ailments are probably linked to this?i know,probably self inflicted??????
