Q: Insurance refuses brand name

I have epilepsy and am prescribed both brand name Lamictal and Keppra. Now that generics have been approved for both medicines, my insurance company has refused to pay for the brand name. My neurologist has written "Brand name necessary" on the prescription, however we are still fighting the insurance company. Are they allowed to refuse it even if the doctor requires brand names?

I've also heard bad stories on the generics, especially the Lamictal.

They can refuse however your physician and you can appeal this with them with supporting documentation as to why generics for these two drugs are not for you...

I would definately challenge them....
