Q: Insurance cost estimate

Hi there-

I'm going to ask an impossible question to answer, but maybe you'll give a try anyway.

I'm wondering, ballpark, what it would cost to obtain health insurance for a family of 4 in Virginia:
Husband: age 37, has Multiple Sclerosis preexisting
Wife: age 33, no known health issues
Son: age 5, no known health issues
Daughter: age 2, no known health issues

We currently are covered by my group plan through work, but the coverage is mediocre, at best. Copays for the MS treatment are expensive, many claims are "mishandled", etc. This causes a considerable amount of aggravation.

I was wondering if we had even a prayer of doing better on the individual market. Rather than going through the entire application process, I thought I'd ask here: What would be an extremely rough estimate of what I might pay for an individual plan? Something either with a low deductible, or perhaps a smallish ($1-2k) deductible if it would lower the premiums enough (I'd definitely go through a $1-2k deductible each year).

Thanks, in advance, for anyone who attempts to answer this broad question. Smile I'll be around to answer any requests for clarification.

You will end up paying a lot. Your work plan gets a group rate. Meaning they are hedging themselves saying that if we insure a certain number of people than there will be more healthy people than sick. When you get an individual plan you do not get this.

I would stick with your health plan as your rates would be better than an individual plan and with your husband having MS (I have it too) the premiums would more than likely be higher and with a possible pre-existing clause...just depends.

Does your employer offer a HSA (Health Savings Account)?

Did you husband spend anytime in the service? I always have a reason for this question....

No. But anyway, do you really think a high deductible plan would help us? We'll easily go through the deductible every year in Avonex prescriptions, alone.

Nope.

ask your employer to consider coverage that works better for its employees. There are many new types of plans that are flexible and cost effective. I'm willing to bet your employer can save money and get you better coverage. All it takes is an open mind and a really good insurance agent.

You will not be able to get affordable individual or family health insurance coverage in Virginia with an MS diagnosis. Do not cancel your group plan. One of the benefits of a group plan is that you are protected by HIPAA laws so you are guaranteed group coverage without pre-ex as long as you come on to the plan when eligible and have prior creditable coverage. The individual health market is expensive for those with serious medical conditions.

Your Children
Oftentimes, the family premium at work is costly. Try to find a High Deductible Individual Policy for your Children and waive them at work, but keep you and your husband on the work policy.
