A woman I've been dating has a brother and father who have been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. She has suffered a few episodes of depression in her life and is taking a mild medication for BP even though she has never been diagnosed with BP at any point. I was told they give her this because of the family history instead of a normal antidepressant what are the chances that she will develop BiPolar? Is there data on percentages of likely-hood in this regard? What can I expect in terms of signs to look for and would this have any affect on future pregnancies, etc., Do the chances increase with the hormonal changes caused by pregnancy?

Inheriting BP
My husband has bipolar. Mood disorders run on his side of the family. His grandmother, cousin, and uncle all have bipolar disorder. One of my children is currently being treated for bipolar (10 years old). Our nephew (15) was recently diagnosed with BP after a suicide attempt. He's now on meds and doing fine. This disease is inherited, it does run in families. However, if you are aware of your disease, get treatment for it and take your meds, it is a very treatable disease. It sounds like your girlfriend is aware of her condition and taking appropriate steps to take care of her mental health. Good luck!

inheriting bp
I have bipolar, diagnosed about 5 years ago. My father had bipolar also. Finally, my cousin on my father's side (his sister's son) is also bipolar. It has been strongly suspected that bipolar is inherited through genetics. I would say in our family, it is sure looking like that is the case. Hope this helps..... karen

BP & Genetics
I have a similar bp/relatives story to karen.
I have had a few psychiatrists treat me and the treatment process always starts with masses of questions including a good look at the family tree. There have certainly been studies done and I do believe you can quantify the probibilities.
I would have thought that the fact that your girlfriend has not developed symptoms to the extent of her brother would be reason for confidence in this area.
Go well
