Q: Informations about HIV tests

Good morning,

I want to ask you a question about HIV tests. I had a low risk "encounter" (not a prostitute or escort) and we had unprotected sex for 5 minutes. I took two weeks after a MEIA HIV test and 5 months and 1 week after (21 weeks) another test. This time a more complex one, a CMIA test (of course together with the tests for other STDs). Both tests came negative. My question is: do I have to take another test after six months or can I consider the results conclusive.

Thank you!

I don't know much about the new tests but I know after waiting three months from the point of infection and taking a blood test, it is recommended that one takes another test after another three months.

Hopefully somebody here can help you out. Unknown88 one of our supporters here knows a lot about the new tests.

All the best

hey
The MEIA test is actually just a synonym for ELISA, an HIV test which detects antibodies your body produces to combat the virus. Using this test it is recommended to get tested 6 months after a possible exposure. However, the ELISA test is very accurate and can detect antibodies 2 weeks to 6 months but this varies person to person. The CMIA (Chemiluminescence Microparticle Immuno Assay) test is the 4th generation of HIV testing. From my understanding the CMIA test can detect the virus sooner then the standard antibody test but I'm not sure how long you should wait for conclusive results. My best advice is wait for the full 6 months and then get tested, I know its hard because I had to do the same thing. Just remember its better to know then to not know.

Best of luck!
