Q: Information about tubal ligation
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 14th, 2009
I had a tubal ligation on 8/29/08. Since then all my periods have been regular except in December when I was 1 week late because of stress from the holidays. I have been within a day or two each month for the beginning of my periods. My last one was 2/29/09 and lasted 6-7 days. I didn't have a period at all the end of March--I waited about a week or two and took a pregnancy test and it was negative. It showed negative about 1 minute after taking it. It is now mid-April and I still haven't had a period. I'm due to start April 28-29th. Should I wait till then and see what happens or is this sort of thing normal for women who have had a tubal ligation? I have a outstanding bill with my OBGYN right now, and I don't have medical coverage at the moment. Should I be worried?

Tubal ligation is a procedure in which the fallopian tubes are severed and sealed in order to prevent fertilization. Tubal ligation does not interfere with the female hormones and most medical professionals agree that it does not cause a hormonal imbalance which might be one of the possible causes for your condition.

If you do not have your period when expected in April, then you might want to visit your gynecologist for hormonal laboratory tests and a pelvic exam.
