Q: Information about HSV infections
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 5th, 2009
Hello,
I was recently diagnosed with Genital HSV Type 1. My partner has Oral HSV Type 1, as we believe is how I contracted the virus.

1. I've just had my first outbreak, more full body symptoms (fever, headach, swollen lymph nodes) and for under the pants, some irritation and lesians. No blisters, etc. I was prescribed the meds about half way through and have been taking them for 4 days now. I feel much better. Only sometime a very mild pain in my leg or theigh. I am wondering when do I know when my outbreak is done and it is more safe to have sex? Other than the chance of transmitting the virus, are there any other risks of having sex with HSV type 1??
2. I've read that HSV can spread to other parts of the body. I can't seem to touch at all down there or shower properly without washing my hands right after and worrying about the possibility of spreading it somewhere else. How common is it to be spread? I'm very worried and wonder about with sex too when it is being touched.

The outbreak can be considered over, once the symptoms completely vanish (including the small irritation). Having sexual intercourse is not recommended if there is a possibility of transmission. Since your partner is already infected, this is not considered a problem. No other risks are reported from having intercourse with a person with HSV type 1 infection.

The herpes simplex infection is considered to be dormant. It means that once you are infected, the virus does not leave the body, but is usually at very low numbers in order to become manifest with its symptoms.

Herpes simplex virus can easily spread to other parts of the body (most often on the skin) if there are already skin lesions as points of entry. You might try to avoid touching the lesions from HSV type 1 with parts of the body that have lesions on their own. Otherwise, you can not affect the spreading of the virus through the body via the blood. You might try to keep your immune system at its peak, because it is the only natural defense your organism has against the manifestation of HSV type infection.
