Q: Information about Fenger-plasty
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 12th, 2008
I will undergo an laparascopy soon and would like to be informed of general success rates. If ureter is damaged at the connection to the kidney, (or blockage is further down,) is this repairable, what negative results can occur. (not the bag I hope?) Just would like a general idea of what I'm in for.

Kidney Conditions Answer A5086
Current medical status: repeated stents
Current medical treatment: BP medication

According to the data you provided, you might be undergoing Laparoscopic Fenger-plasty. Before this treatment a stent is placed in the ureter. The stent can also be placed in the very operating room. During the laparoscopy the narrowed part of the ureter is removed and the two loose ends connected. The stent is left for approximately 6 weeks to allow the ureter to heal properly. The stent is removed at a follow-up office visit.

The Fenger-plasty is considered very secure and is preferred in many hospitals over other methods for treating kidney ureter blockage.
