Q: Information about angiomyolipoma
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 27th, 2009
In addition to the information submitted, since 2004 the renal angiomyolipoma has grown from 4.5 to 4.8 cm. My questions are:
1. possibility of spontaneous hemorrhage
2. possibility of spontaneous hemorrhage during pregnacy due to estrogens. I am thiniking of getting married and get a baby, is it dangerous for me or the baby?
3. do I have tuberous sclerosis?
4. is there a treatment? Drug treatment, total kidney removal, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), embolism or other alternative? Pls have in mind that my angiomyolipoma is assymptomatic.
5. possibility of an angiomyolipoma in my right kidney or other body parts

Thank you in advance!

The possibility for spontaneous hemorrhage of angiomyolipoma is about 35%. Hemorrhagic complications are more common in patients with bigger tumors (greater than 4 cm diameter), younger age and presence of tuberous sclerosis. There are no data that pregnancy increases the risk for tumor hemorrhages. Massive hemorrhage during the pregnancy is definitely dangerous for you and the baby.

Chances for you having tuberous sclerosis are about 20%.

Asymptomatic patients do not require any treatment. If there are symptoms, a partial or total nephrectomy can be requested depending upon the tumor size and presence of tuberous sclerosis. Renal arterial embolization can be used to control hemorrhage if present.

Angiomyolipoma can be bilateral but rarely.
