Q: inflamed follicules on scrotum
asked by: mmm3 on November 24th, 2008

about 3 months ago i had sex with someone and the condom broke. about a week later i noticed itching on my scrotum and around my anus. Then i noticed bumps on my scrotum where the hair follicules are. i tried home treatment with yeast and jock itch medecine. Then I went to my doctor and he prescribed several topical steroids. nothing helped. I also consulted a dermatologist. All feel it is not an STD and just due to "stress". my scrotum seems a little red in general to go along with the inflamed follicules. The follicules are not always raised but still overall redness. The itching has gone down but still a tingling or sensative sensation on scrotum and anus. What can this be?

Do you find the crease between the top of the leg and the genitals, itchy and irritated, too?

Do you have any idea what this could be? Looking at the crease between my legs and genitals, it does look irritated.

This sounds as a fungal infection of your scrotal, upper inner thigh, and, anal skin, and fungal foliculitis of scrotal hair follicles.
Acctually, fungi enter the skin along a hair and infect its follicles, too.
When the infection occurs in superficial, upper part of follicles, they look like red bumps, pus-filled blisters, and, itchiness and sensitivity appears.
Sometimes, steroids can even make your symptoms worse.
Consult your doctor for prescription of more potent antifungal ointment or oral antifungal medicine.
Keep the areas clean and dry, cause the fungi like warm, moist environment to grow.

Thanks for the information. I tried some OTC yeast and fungal medicine initially and it didn't help, but will check with my doctor on maybe a stronger antifungal medicine. The doctor said that area is sensative and can be easily irritated which can prolong a rash so I might see if there is an oral medicine that i can try.

Since I have tried OTC anti-fungal medication without success, what other possibilities can it be. I am still worried about some sort of STD, but the doctors i have been to keep dismissing it as stress or non STD related. I have been to a STD clinic, my primary care and two dermatologists. I dont know who else to go to for help! The itching seems to be worse at night, more on the anus area and general groin area, but i notice the inflamation on my scrotum and more recently feeling irritation around the area between my legs and groin.

Were you ever able to get a proper diagnosis and correction? I am having the same problem since I had unprotected sex.

It's a fungus
Has nothing to do with the condom breaking, it's transmitted through skin contact and a condom doesn't cover the entire region. No big deal.

You need ketoconazole cream prescription strength.
